What to Expect at Your First At-Home IV Visit

Rahab Njuguna, RNAugust 1, 2026 5 min read

If you have never had IV therapy at home, the idea can feel a little unfamiliar. It should not be. Here is exactly how a RapidRefresh visit works, step by step, from the nurse who will be at your door.

Before the visit: booking and a quick health check

It starts when you book, online in about a minute or by phone. Before your appointment you complete a short health intake: your history, any medications, allergies, and what you are hoping to get out of the visit. This is not a formality. It is how we confirm that IV hydration is a good fit for you and choose the right drip. If anything in your history suggests you should check with your own doctor first, we will tell you.

When the nurse arrives

Rahab, our registered nurse, comes to your home, office, or hotel with everything sealed and prepared. She introduces herself, reviews your intake and consent with you in person, and takes a quick set of vitals. You choose where you want to settle in: the couch, a kitchen chair, the patio. There is no waiting room and no rush.

The drip itself

Once you are comfortable, she cleans the site, places a small IV catheter (usually in the arm), and starts your drip. Most people feel a brief pinch and then very little after that. A typical session runs 30 to 60 minutes, so you can read, work, or simply rest while the fluids and nutrients go in. She stays with you the whole time and keeps an eye on how you feel.

Afterward

When the bag is finished, she removes the catheter, checks the site, and packs everything out. Many clients feel refreshed quickly, and for others it settles in over the next few hours. You can go straight back to your day, with no downtime. We will mention anything simple worth doing afterward, like drinking water and eating normally.

A note on safety: IV therapy is a medical service, so it is not right for everyone. If you are pregnant, or you have heart, kidney, or blood-pressure conditions, talk with your own healthcare provider before booking, and share those details on your intake. RapidRefresh is RN-led and physician-directed, and we would always rather you check first than guess.

How to get the most from your visit

  • Hydrate normally beforehand and eat something. You do not need to fast.
  • Wear or bring a top with sleeves you can push up easily.
  • Have your medication list and any allergies handy for the intake.
  • Pick a comfortable spot with somewhere to rest your arm.
  • Tell the nurse how you are feeling at any point. This is your visit.

Questions & Answers

Does the IV hurt?

Most people feel a quick pinch when the small catheter goes in, and then very little for the rest of the session. Your nurse places it carefully and checks in with you throughout.

How long does a visit take?

A typical drip runs 30 to 60 minutes, plus a few minutes at the start for your intake, consent, and vitals, and a few at the end. Plan for about an hour.

Do I need to do anything to prepare?

Just hydrate normally, eat something beforehand (there is no need to fast), and have your medication list and any allergies ready for the intake. Wearing sleeves you can push up helps.

Who administers the IV?

Every visit is administered by Rahab Njuguna, a registered nurse with over 22 years of acute-care experience, following physician-directed protocols. RapidRefresh is fully insured, and you can verify a Texas nurse license through Nursys, linked below.
